Three elephants slaughtered in Matsulu Village

Park officials received reports that the bulls had escaped from the park and entered Matsulu Village which is one of the neighbouring communities on its borders.
SANParks dispatched a helicopter upon request from the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) to herd the trio back. However, it was unsuccessful because of interference on the ground by community members. This led to the decision to put the elephants down.
The situation was monitored and administered by the MTPA under the applicable legislation for such incidents as Matsulu is outside of the park and within the jurisdiction of the agency.
“We received a phone call about three elephant bulls who escaped near Matsulu. Due to the interference of the community, we took a decision to shoot them,” said Lesley Nyawo, spokesman for KNP.
The community harvested the meat and other body parts, and it is not clear at this stage whether the ivory was taken.

The community was someway wrong, even if they were protecting themselves the elephants were not suppose to be slaughtered.  Elephants are the symbol of the nation they must be protected and kept safe so the next generations will witness the beauty of the nature.

  1. Honestly what the community did was unacceptable...these elephant just escape from the park not to be slaughtered. They just escape to survive on their own but it so sad that they couldn't make it.

  2. It is never a great idea for a community to take matters at their hand because things like this are always out of control. It is said what they did to the elephants

  3. This so sad, I believe that elephants are such peaceful animals and so this is just so shocking and gruesome.
